Elder Scrolls Online is a different take on what we've come to understand from the Elder Scrolls series. Even though it is set in the fictional world of Tamriel, the game is an MMO, which is far from what we already knew of the ES universe. The story begins as many in the series do, with the player being held prisoner and needing to escape. However this time you have been sacrificed to the Daedric Prince Molag-Bal and have had your soul taken from you.
The game is very similar to the rest of the series in that it is very non-linear and you can venture off where you please, taking on side quests which you can get from randomly meeting people along the road. Some can seem very meaningless however and reap very little reward, so they come to feel more like filler content to make the game seem more expansive than it really is.
That being said, I was thoroughly impressed with the graphics in game for an MMO. I don't tend to play many MMOs usually due to the community within them, and I usually notice the graphics really aren't that great. Touching on the community aspect, I have not had a single problem in the short time I have been playing the game. If anything I have had nothing but positive experiences in the game. I had one stranger approach me and ask to trade, instantly thinking to myself 'I've got nothing useful for you, so let's see what he does'. He gave me a new staff, which was far better than the one I began with and he just ran off in to the distance. I'm still using that staff now!
One thing I am still struggling with is the concept of currency in this game. I've come to understand Crowns cannot be found and must be bought from the PS store, however Gold I come across in small amounts. Problem being, I am still far from finding any sort of store I can buy from which is quite frustrating if you're trying to improve gear.
Another thing that is a opinion splitter on this game, seems to be its definition of MMO. Some people see it as an MMO, others see it as a Single Player game masquerading as an MMO. Personally I'm split in the middle. Sure the game doesn't have much in terms of the bigger ones, however the feeling that there are thousands of other people running around the world, immerses you a bit further in the game...
Pros:
- Brilliant graphics for an MMO
- Similar Elder Scrolls feeling
Cons:
- Pointless side quests
- Not much guidance to follow
Overall: 5/10

Write commentsI agree that ESO does play a lot as if it were a single player game disguised as an MMO, but that may just be because there seem to be so few people playing the game online, in my experience. 5/10 seems a fair rating, but I might give it a 6, just because the feel of the world and the fluidity of the combat give me a warm feeling inside.
ReplyThanks for the comment. The fluidity is pretty good, but also feels very limiting at some points. I'm glad you agree on the most part though :)
